Preparing for Winter Weather
Unusual or severe weather conditions can lead to a number of different situations, such as bus cancellation – both regular and Special Education, and school closures. To keep you up-to-date, the School Board publishes cancellation and closures, when applicable, by media announcements and announcement on the Board website.
Please listen carefully to announcements as schools may be open even when buses are cancelled. On days that school buses have been cancelled, field trips will also be cancelled.
--- An announcement stating bus cancellations and school closures will be made on
radio stations CHYM. 96.7 FM, CKKW 1090 AM, and CFCA 105.3 KOOL FM
as soon as possible in the morning, and repeated periodically until 9:00 a.m.
cancellations and school closures.
School will resume the following day unless another closing is announced on the radio and WRDSB website.
Accommodation Review
Elizabeth Ziegler Public School is one of seven elementary schools involved in an accommodation review. A Pupil Accommodation Review is a formal public process which works under Ministry / Board guidelines, timelines and requirements. The formal public process ensures a decision by a school board regarding the future of a school has the full involvement of an informed local community. This review was approved by the Board in June 2009 and was one of the recommendations at the end of a lengthy Boundary Review Study. The accommodation review process is different from a Boundary Study in that school closure / consolidation can be considered.
The accommodation review working committee consists of an administrator from each school along with two parent representatives, board staff and community partners. Our Elizabeth Ziegler parent representatives are Kelly Miller and Cindy Shirley. The committee meets frequently and discusses the issues such as the need to rebuild Lexington Public School, where to rebuild Lexington Public School, and how to address the declining enrolment in the study area. The board planners have developed possible scenarios that address and solve these issues.
Partial French Immersion Registration
All parents/guardians of Senior Kindergarten children interested in Grade One Partial French Immersion starting in September 2010 must complete a registration form on the Waterloo Region District School Board web site beginning January 7, 2010 at 8:00 am. Please register as soon as possible if you have not already done so because it is based on a first come first serve basis.

The Power of Many!
Union of Youth, a fundraising organization in our school, is doing an outstanding job at fundraising. Just in this past month, U of Y has raised over $700! Isn’t that amazing? And U of Y is donating all of the money to Pennies for Peace, a group which is building, and supporting, schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This fundraising will continue throughout the year, and with support from the parents, children, and school, will hope to raise over $1 000!
The big lesson from our Penny Drive is the power of many. A penny by it self, does mot seem like much. But when we all work together,
we are able to accomplish great things!
STUDENT DROP-OFF AND PARKING REMINDER
There is no parking available on school property for parents wishing to drop off or pick up children. Parents are not to enter the school parking lot or use the driveway for pick up or drop off purposes. Parking is available on John Street, across from the main entrance of the school, and on Dover Street behind the school, for parents wishing to park and walk their children to the school. A pathway is available from Dover Street to the back of the school property. Either of these would be an appropriate place to arrange to meet your children after school as well. PARKING ON DOVER STREET FOR PICK UP AND DROP OFF PURPOSES IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO EASE CONGESTION AT THE FRONT OF THE SCHOOL. The area on Moore Avenue in front of the school is reserved for school buses only. This
restriction is regularly enforced by the City of Waterloo, and hefty fines will be the result of any parking infractions. There is no parking on the school side of Moore Avenue. Please refer to the parking signs as posted. If your children walk to school, please remind them that they are not to cross to the back of the school through the parking lot, for safety reasons. When walking to your car with your child, please do not walk between school buses or cars. Drivers may not see you and this is a very dangerous practise to teach your child. Help us keep our school safe by following our parking and drop off policies!
THE POWER OF ONE – BULLY PREVENTION
I will not bully,
I will not stand by while others are bullied,
I will report bullying whenever I see it…
…because I have
The Power of ONE
During the month of November many EZ students had the opportunity to practice THE POWER OF ONE while participating in Bully Prevention role playing activities with Mrs. Howey. E.Z. is a ‘take action’ school with bystanders trained to help end bullying. The bystander message was reinforced by a contest held during Bully Prevention Week. Every day, the ballot box was filled to the brim with student responses.
Students created slogans for the display cabinet – here are just a few:
- Stand up, don't be a bully! Forget being a bystander, help the victim. Sam H. rm 309
- Don't be a bystander, don't be as bad as the bully, you have the power of one. rm 309
- What is the cure to bullying? That's easy - YOU! Do NOT be a bystander. Megan rm 309
- Stand up and be bully free! Support the bystander. Don't be a bully. Rachel W. 309
- Anyone can make a difference because you all have the power of ONE! Maddie rm 309
- Stand up to anyone. Use your power of one! Hannah Rm 309
- Everyone has the power to make a difference! Kate Rm 309
Students have been encouraged to check out the ‘webisodes’ on the bullying prevention websites listed in the Computer Lab. Information about the WRDSB Anti-Bullying Arts Competition is posted in the Lab, as well.
Internet safety is an important subject for families to discuss because many children use MSN and Facebook. Children need to know what to do if they encounter cyber bullying.
Help Us Keep Our School Stranger Free!
It is crucial that Elizabeth Ziegler Public School is a safe place for learning. We do not want our students to be comfortable with or accepting of adults wandering through our building. To your child and their friends you are a familiar face but to all others you are a stranger. Please meet your child at a pre-determined spot outside at the end each school day. If you need to pick up your child early or are here to visit / volunteer please come to the school office. We appreciate your support in helping us keep EZ stranger free!
Clubs at Elizabeth Ziegler
Intramurals
All students in grades 4-6 are invited to participate in a weekly intramural sports club. Games will be every Thursday at 11:10 am in the gym. Students will be playing indoor soccer, volleyball, floor hockey, basketball amd dodgeball. If you have any further questions please contact Mr. Banks at the school.
P.A.L.S. (Playground Activity Leaders in Schools)
Students in grades 4-6 are invited to be a P.A.L.S leader. P.A.L.S leaders meet on Tuesdays at 1:20 pm out on the schoolyard and organize low organization games for students. Mrs Howey and Mr. Banks will assist the leaders in setting up these activities. If you have any further questions please contact Mr. Banks at the school.
HEAD LICE REMINDER TO FAMILIES
The only way head lice can be controlled is with careful, regular monitoring at home.
If head lice are found, please notify the school immediately and begin treatments.
Head lice shampoo alone will not clear the problem. Generally children will need each
egg removed from the child’s head by hand. A form from our office must be filled out
upon your child’s return to school to indicate that they are free from lice or nits.

DOGS ON THE YARD
For the safety and comfort of our students we ask families to maintain control of their dog when walking to and from school. We ask dog owners to stay on the grass area with their dogs. This allows students who are nervous or anxious around dogs to have a safe area (the tarmac) to wait for the school bell. Dogs must be leashed and kept close to their owners to provide a safe school yard experience for all of our students. If you are not able to meet these guidelines, then you will need to leave your pet at home. We thank you for your
co-operation in creating a safe and inviting school environment for all of our students!
Absence Reporting
Please call 519 570-8077 and dial extension 3246# to report your child's absence.
Volunteers Needed!
Our very popular pizza program depends on parent volunteers. Parents are needed to help count money and tabulate pizza orders. We need parents to come to the school on Fridays during the second break to help sort and hand out pizza boxes to a student representative from each class. Our pizza program supports all our school wide initiatives such as the purchase of planners, French library books, our Dr. Seuss night, and transportation to skating.
Please call the school office if you will be able to help out during the 2009-2010 school year!
VALUABLES AND LOST ITEMS
We discourage students from bringing valuable items to school. Some toys and electronics are targets for theft. The school will not take responsibility for the safekeeping of these items. Students are encouraged to frequently check our “Lost and Found” bins. If a student brings a cell phone to school it must be turned off during school hours and stored in a backpack. As always, the school will not be responsible for missing valuables.
